Quality by the brand and by the press

Working by the brand and by the press means listening to and understanding the brand’s requirements with every product renewal. In the production of print tools our starting point is always the technical requirements and conditions of the press.

We add smoothness, quality, responsibility and productivity to the cooperation between brand owners and packaging printers. As the most important media of the brand, a high-quality package stands out on the store shelf.

On the side of brands and packaging printers since 1995

Marvaco Oy’s roots go back to the 1990s. Vesa Valkamo, who started his career as master printer at the Finnish State Printing Centre, knew that the best result is achieved when print artworks are always produced by the conditions of the press. He also understood that the use of printing inks could be made far more efficient compared with the practices of that time. This would be especially useful in the fast-changing world of FMCG packaging.

Vesa continued developing his ideas together with his son Marko Valkamo by founding Marvaco. From the very beginning operations focused on close cooperation with customers — both brand owners and packaging printers. Thus the brand requirements also became part of the company’s core under the guidance of Heidi Valkamo. In its current form the company has operated since 2008.

Innovations for the benefit of the entire packaging print industry

Today Marvaco operates in the Nordics as a pioneer that renews packaging print processes by reducing the consumption of materials and the carbon footprint of printing. Our company is best known as the developer of EGPTM – Extended Gamut Printing, which increases productivity and eco-efficiency.

During the company’s growth phase Marvaco’s CEO was the current board member Dr. Kai Lankinen. Under his leadership and together with the Valkamo family, Marvaco was put on the world map as a technology leader and innovator in color use, especially in flexographic printing, which is the main technology for packaging printing

An easy, flexible and responsible partner

As the packaging and printing industry keeps developing, Marvaco’s goal is to be the number one choice for both brands and printing houses. This requires new investments in customer service and in technology. Mirva Koskinen has been developing the cooperation between brand owners and printing houses to be even smoother. Under her leadership, Marvaco brings customers a digital service channel that is the customer’s interface for cooperation and service.

We do not compromise on personal customer service. However, a digital service platform is today’s standard, and therefore it is continuously developed. We also increase production flexibility by refining processes together with our partner network.

Flexographic printing is quickly becoming the quality leader in packaging printing. Therefore improving the quality of flexo print tools and minimizing the environmental impact of the whole process are on Marvaco’s agenda. With efficient color management and EGPTM technology, customers can reduce their CO2 emissions even more than the total carbon footprint of Marvaco’s own production.

Good team spirit produces meticulous quality

Marvaco has grown both organically and through acquisitions. With respect for local expertise and roots, the corporate culture retains healthy curiosity, diligence and the joy of succeeding together. Customers know this too— they are met with a smile and flexibility even in the tight turns of everyday life.

For example, the predecessor of today’s Pori unit was Sata-Flexo, whose valuable legacy includes, among other things, the way of organizing according to each key customer. Marvaco has a unit in Sunne, Sweden (formerly Flexopartner AB), where under the leadership of its founder Leif Backman the total quality created by the whole organization’s cooperation — and ensuring it — strengthened into a Marvaco hallmark.

A responsible printing process is also productive

Thanks to EGPTM technology, fewer resources, materials and energy are needed to print packaging. By standardizing the color palette of the press, the make-ready and wash-up times of color units are also significantly reduced. As a result, the carbon footprint of print production is substantially reduced.

In the GreenerPrintingTM concept, the brand owner can already consider at the design stage the requirements of the standard color palette, whereby the environmental load of the brand package can be reduced. We are a reliable partner in responsible printing because we master the entire process from the design base to the start of the print job.

In Marvaco’s own operations, environmental responsibility plays a significant role. In both the Pori and Sunne plate manufacturing units, raw materials are used efficiently, wash water is distilled for reuse and the use of solvents is minimized. In the Pori unit a large share of the energy used is produced by solar power and heat is produced geothermally. An ever larger share of plate material is also recycling-based. Responsibility is productive.

Our goal is always to realize 100 percent the desired brand appearance requirement. This requires monitoring brand consistency across different materials and technologies, and seamless cooperation all the way to the final print production. A good indication of this is the numerous international awards we have received in industry competitions.
